Fire Drill Podcast – Talking IVF and Finances

Fertility journey, Reader's Top Picks! / Wednesday, August 15th, 2018

Seeing that it was something that is rarely talked about in the Financial Independence community, the amazing ladies over at Fire Drill Podcast invited us on for an interview on our IVF journey and infertility.

“Jenny and Jimmy are the All-American couple. He was the hot firefighter that fell in love with the ER nurse.

Little did they know they were a little too average. Jenny and Jimmy are part of the statistics in America on infertility. They didn’t realize how hard it was going to be to conceive. After a long and expensive struggle, they were rewarded with a bouncing baby girl.”

If you haven’t read our IVF journey I’ll give you a quick background. It was early on in our marriage that we learned I had stage IV endometriosis along with a few other factors making it “nearly impossible” to conceive even with IVF according to our doctor. We initially refused to believe that so we started with the least invasive and worked our way up to finally accepting our need for IVF. It was over a 2 year process that cost us over $90,000, but it is something we wouldn’t trade for the world since it resulted in our daughter, Sophia.

Gwen and J did a wonderful job addressing something as “taboo” is infertility. Just like money, sometimes people don’t like to talk about it. Understanding that sometimes couples don’t want to talk due to fear, confusion or even embarrassment, they invited us on to share our story and talk numbers.

Being in the very beginning stages of our financial journey, we did not have the resources we would today. While we did not take the best path financially, it was a necessary path if we wanted to create a family, and in the end it was the right choice. If you or someone you know are going through infertility the podcast can provide some incredible insight in to everything from the process, to finances, to some pretty helpful tips we picked up along the way.

So, thank you again to Gwen and J. Infertility and Financial Independence are not two things that can seemingly coexist, but we are proof it is possible. These ladies did what not many people can do and that’s making an uncomfortable topic comfortable. Though their questions were direct and therefore so were our answers, they did so in a way that created a heartfelt conversation more than an info session.

If you’ve got some time, check out the podcast HERE, or save it for later. Have a friend or family member struggling with infertility? Share this with them! The more you hear others talking about their journey, the more comfortable you become in your own.
